NOTE: APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO APRIL 20TH!

ABOUT SUMMER CAMP:

This summer, NYTE will bring together playwrights, directors and actors for an exciting artistic expedition! NYTE will host an intensive, two week-long workshop providing several selected new works a forum for creative exploration and development.

Who:  Applications can be submitted by any individual/group of artists/theatre companies with a specific project in mind.

What:  Works or scripts in progress, proposals for devised works, re-imaginings of classic pieces, and so forth. This is an opportunity to generate, refine, devise, expand and explore-- an exciting and supportive forum for the development and growth of your piece.

When: NYTE Summer Camp will run from June 1-14, 2009. Each project should expect to have approximately 20 hours of rehearsal spread out throughout the two weeks.  As this will be an intensive lab-like setting, we encourage all participants to be available for the workshop’s entirety, and all conflicts must be included with your application.

Where: While we are open to applications from artists outside the NY metropolitan area, all workshop rehearsals will take place in Manhattan and applicants must be in NY for the duration of the Camp.

Why: As part of this season’s exploration, “The    (your voice here)   Experiment”, NYTE is committed to nurturing and supporting new voices in the theatre through our “Summer Camp.” We hope this Camp will yield new, lasting relationships with talented playwrights and other artistic collaborators and that this will be the first step in NYTE’s ongoing relationship with the accepted pieces.

How: Fill out the application and submit to nytecamp@gmail.com by April 17th.  We are available to answer any questions on the application via email.

What Happens Next: New York Theatre Experiment will review all applications and select a pool of finalists. If you are chosen as a finalist, you will be notified by May 1st and will be contacted by a NYTE company member to set up an interview. The interviews will give you a chance to tell us more about yourself as an artist and to share your passion and vision for your work in person. Phone interviews can be arranged for finalists who live outside the New York area.

Finalists invited to participate in NYTE Summer Camp will be notified by May 8th. Should you be selected, there is a $75 participation fee which will go to cover a small fraction of the rehearsal/performance space, copying, and additional costs, due by May 22nd. During May, the NYTE producers and casting director will work Camp participants to assemble a creative team for each selected project. Summer Camp will begin on June 1st and will culminate with a public sharing of all featured works on June 14th.

NYTE SUMMER CAMP 2009

APPLICATION

NYTE’s aim for the 2009 Summer Camp is to discover and nurture the most compelling voices and dynamic projects being developed in the theatre today. We are looking to build strong, lasting artistic partnerships with our collaborators and are open to the possibility of continued collaboration on the pieces selected. We ask that you submit pieces that you are interested in having NYTE consider for future development & production.

NAME OF PROJECT:

NAME OF APPLICANT(S) & ROLE(S): (example: Jack Smith, Playwright)

PART A: ARTISTIC STATEMENTS

Feel free to use additional space for the questions below (no more than one page per question).

Question #1: What is your project?  Describe it. How did it first come to be, and why are you interested in exploring it further? What stage of the process are you in with this particular project right now?  Be as detailed as possible.

Question #2: Tell us about your creative process. Why do you feel that this type of exploratory process will benefit your work?  Knowing that you will have approximately five 4-hour work sessions, how might you use the allotted time? Describe your approach to the process and any techniques you envision using to develop your work.

Question #3:  Tell us a little bit more about yourself as an artist. Write a short blurb about anything you would like us to know: your influences, inspirations, your preferred style of work, or anything else you feel will give us a stronger sense of your point of view.

PART B: TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROJECT

The following questions will help to give us a fuller understanding of the history of your piece.

Question #1:  NYTE Summer Camp is an opportunity for artists from our community and beyond to come together to workshop and explore the selected new works. We will be happy to help match your project with an outstanding team (including actors, a director, etc. ). If there are any other collaborators attached to your project, please list them and their roles here:

Question #2:  NYTE is open to collaborations of all sorts, including co-productions with other organizations. Has this project ever been produced, read, or workshopped? If so, when/where/by whom?  If your project has any ongoing affiliations (with theatre companies, backers, specific artistic collaborators, etc.), please tell us about them.

Question #3:  NYTE Summer Camp runs from June 1-14, 2009. We ask that all applicants be available for the duration of the Camp. While the schedule will be rigorous, it should still allow for you to work at your day/night job when you are not scheduled to rehearse. Please let us know about any existing conflicts (including projected work schedule) at this time.

PART C: SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS

Please be sure to include the following materials with your completed application:

1. The script, outline, or proposal for your project.

2. Bios and/or resumes for all applicants and attached collaborators

***Please email your completed application to nytecamp@gmail.com NO LATER than April 17th, 2009***
